Creating a Consumer Group
Last updated: 2025-09-19 09:57:46

Scenarios

A Consumer Group is a scalable and fault-tolerant Consumer mechanism provided by Kafka. Multiple consumers exist in a Group, and all consumers in the Group consume subscribed Topic messages. A Consumer can consume multiple partitions simultaneously, but one Partition can only be consumed by a single Consumer within the Group.

Restrictions and Limitations

The total number of automatically and manually created consumer groups in a single instance is recommended to be no more than 500. Exceeding this limit may result in certain restrictions.

Operation Steps

Create Consumer Group Via Console
Automatically Create Consumer Group through the Client
1. Log in to the CKafka console.
2. Select instance list in the left sidebar, after selecting a region click the ID/Name of the target instance to go to instance basic information page.
3. On the instance basic information page, select the Consumer Group tab, click Create Consumer Group, and set the consumer group information.
Consumer group name: Set a custom name that must comply with the naming rule, can only contain letters, digits, underscore, "-", ".", and must start with a letter.
Select Topic: In the dropdown list, select the topic to subscribe to for the consumer group. You can select multiple topics at the same time.
4. Click Submit. The just created Consumer Group can be seen in the Group list.
Auto-create consumer group means when a new consumer group subscribes to a Topic for the first time, the client will automatically detect whether the group exists. If it does not exist and the consumer group name complies with naming rules (can only contain letters, numbers, underscore, "-", ".", and must start with a letter), the system will automatically create this consumer group.
CKafka enables auto-create Consumer Group by default. You can manually enable or turn it off in the CKafka console. After disabling, only existing Consumer groups in the console can be used, and new Consumer groups cannot be created automatically.
Only Pro Edition instances with version 2.4.1 or higher support manually disabling the auto-create Consumer Group feature on the console.

Enable/Disable Auto-Create Consumer Group
