TencentDB for MySQL provides a cross-region backup feature, supporting storing backup files in another region, helping users enhance regulatory and disaster recovery capabilities while improving data reliability. This document introduces the cross-region backup feature.

Background Information

Data is an integral part of enterprise operations. While digital transformation brings convenience, the vulnerabilities of electronic data and stored information being highly susceptible to damage and loss have been exposed. In the face of natural disasters, system failures, employee errors, or virus infections, a single incident could cause operational disruption or even catastrophic losses. Therefore, ensuring the security and integrity of core data is a priority every enterprise must prioritize.
TencentDB for MySQL provides a cross-region backup feature for storing backup files in other regions, minimizing data loss caused by natural disasters, system failures, and other incidents. This cross-region backup enables high availability for database recovery and meets requirements for data availability and security, cross-region backup and recovery, cross-region disaster recovery, long-term data archiving, and compliance.

Cross-Region Backup Description

Single-node cloud disk edition instances currently do not support the cross-region backup feature.
Cross-region backup can restore data to the region where the instance is located or the region where the backup is stored.
After cross-region backup is enabled, local default backups are not affected, and both are retained.
Cross-region backup is triggered immediately after the local automatic backup completes, dumping the automatic backup to cross-region backup storage devices.
The retention period of cross-region backups only affects the lifecycle of backups stored in cross-region storage.
Backups stored in remote regions and binlogs are not eligible for free storage space. The storage usage of cross-region backups is billed to the backup region of the source instance.
Enabling or disabling cross-region backup and modifying region options will not affect existing backups.
After cross-region backup is enabled, the latest valid backup and binlogs from the time of the latest valid backup to the current time will be synchronized to the target region.
Re-enabling cross-region backup will cause backups stored in remote regions prior to the re-enablement time to lose point-in-time recovery capability.

Enable Cross-Region Backup

1. Log in to the TencentDB for MySQL console. In the instance list, click the instance ID or click manage in the Operation column to go to the instance management page.
2. On the instance management page, choose Backup and Restoration > Cross-Region Backup.
3. After the configuration is completed in the cross-region backup settings window, click OK to enable cross-region backup.
Cross-Region Backup: Disabled by default.
Backup Binlog: Automatically enabled when cross-region backup is enabled, and can be disabled separately.
Backup Region: You must select at least one region different from the primary instance, and can select up to two regions.
Cross-Region Retention Period: Defaults to 7 days, can be set to 3 days - 1830 days. Backup sets will be automatically deleted upon expiration.
4. After cross-region backup is completed, the backup will be synchronized to the destination region and can be queried in the backup list of the source instance.
5. Files for cross-region backup are displayed under the Backup Region item, showing all regions you selected for backup. The backup list displays the following fields:

File Name
The file name can be set during backup creation, and modification is not supported after creation.

Disable Cross-Region Backup

You can disable the cross-region backup feature through the console. After disabling, cross-region backup files will not be deleted immediately; they will be automatically deleted after the set lifecycle expires.
1. Log in to the TencentDB for MySQL console, in the instance list, click Instance ID or Operation > Manage, and go to the instance management page.
2. On the instance management page, choose Backup and Restoration > Cross-Region Backup.
3. In the cross-region backup settings window, select to disable and click OK.

FAQs

Why Are There Still Charges After Cross-Region Backup Is Disabled?

When the free storage space is exhausted, backup space exceeding the quota will be charged. After cross-region backup is disabled, new backups will not be generated, but existing backups will not be immediately deleted. Existing backups have a retention period and will continue to occupy storage space until expiration, incurring costs during this period. You can set the backup retention period; after expiration, all backup files will be automatically purged, and no further cross-region backup costs will be incurred.
